MLS&T - Careers
MLS&T graduates go on to careers as designers, managers, consultants, researchers and educators in:
- Small to large corporations
- Government bodies
- E-learning companies
- Vocational Education and Training
- Health Care
- Professional Development & Lifelong Learning
- Primary and Secondary Schools
- Research and Higher Education
Some are looking to get academic qualifications in e-learning for greater expertise and credibility in a field they are already involved in. They may want to get that promotion or change career directions. Others are pursuing a research or academic career in the field. All our students have a desire to gain expert skills and knowledge in designing successful learning experiences with technology.
For specific examples, read some of our graduate stories located below and in the Professional and Research sections.
Student Profile
Annette Culley: Educational Designer, Sydney eLearning & Owner of Instructional Design Australia
Annette wanted to change career directions from teaching to technology-based education design. She is now working as an e-learning designer for higher education and does work for government and business as a private consultant.
- Q. How did you come to your decision to enrol in the MLS&T?
I had been working in Secondary Schools as a computing teacher where I designed and developed the school intranets for staff and students. Although this intranet was functional I wanted to learn about world best practices when using technology for education. - Q. Do you think your MLS&T experience has had any impact on the work you do now or on your career path?
Absolutely! After my 20 years as a teacher I wanted to leave the face-to-face classroom and find a new career that would draw on both my educational and IT experience. Even before I finished the course I found contract work as an Instructional Designer. Within six months of finishing the course I gained full time employment as an Educational Designer – eLearning at the University of Sydney. - Q. What was your favourite thing about your experience here?
It was very important to me and my motivation that I could choose my own direction within the course structure. I was able to study the content that was of interest to me and hence integrate all my units of study into one comprehensive body of knowledge, taking me in my own direction. I also enjoyed learning from and working with teachers who are world leaders in their fields. - Q. Anything you would like to say to anyone considering further study in e-learning with the MLS&T?
There are so many prevailing myths about how people learn and how technology should be used for learning. This course on “how people learn with technology” dispels many of these myths with evidence based on scientific research.
Student Profile
Hannah Forsyth: Higher Education Online Learning Manager & PhD Candidate
Hannah started in the professional stream and moved to research. She currently works as a learning manager in Higher Education and is doing a PhD.
- Q. When did you graduate?
I completed the Graduate Certificate in Learning Science & Technology. I did the GradCert in one year while I worked full time. This was pretty tough, but it was so relevant to work that it was not as difficult as other programs might have been. - Q. How did you come to your decision to enrol in the MLS&T?
I was keen to develop my knowledge of educational theories, my understanding of technology and my skills in educational design. The program had a nice balance of practical applications and current research. - Q. Do you think your MLS&T experience has had any impact on the work you do now or on your career path?
I used the things I learned as soon as I learned them - and I also found I regularly brought things I learned at work to my study. After I had finished my study, I drew regularly on the things I had learned and found that I often pulled out material (often my own assignments) to help with some aspect of educational design or research. Since then I have changed jobs and have no doubt that the qualification and the reputation of CoCo enhanced my career opportunities and assisted me in getting to my next position. - Q. What was your favourite thing about your experience here?
The group work was my favourite thing about the experience - and I hope the people I worked with agree! I really appreciated being able to learn from a range of colleagues and also to share what can be quite a confronting experience: learning challenging and new types of things. I also enjoyed the live online classes - I missed sharing those thoughts and professional experiences after I finished. - Q. Anything you would like to say to anyone considering further study in e-learning with the MLS&T?
I would recommend the MLS&T to anyone looking to work or conduct research in online education - or indeed those who already are working in it. I almost feel like I could do with doing it again in few years!
