A blended approach
Work from home, or come on campus the choice is yours. It wouldn’t make sense to take an entire degree about e-learning without experiencing online collaborative learning for yourself. As a Learning Science & Technology student, you’ll log in each week to a vibrant virtual classroom. During online sessions, you’ll share in discussion with your instructors and peers, structured around essential topics and learning goals.
Classes are deliberately scheduled after work hours to accommodate our many working learners, and there are generally 1 or 2 compulsory face-to-face meetings, usually held at the very beginning and end of the semester. These face-to-face workshops give you the opportunity to meet the group of people you’ll be interacting with all semester, as well as get to know your instructors for the course. You can also take advantage of university facilities, participate from a campus computer or join your instructors in person at the CoCo Research Centre for live webcast events.
Students typically participate from Sydney, as well as from farther away, like Brisbane and Melbourne. One or two short visits to Sydney to interact face to face and the rest can be done from anywhere you have a broadband connection. This flexibility allows for a diverse group of learners.
“I really enjoyed the learning experiences that I had in the core units of the MLS &T program. I am missing the online interaction. For me as an adult learner, I valued so much the blended approach in those units... Though it was a hurdle to get over initially.. the learning was truly engaging and dynamic.” - Janet
Masters, Graduate Diploma, Graduate Certificate
The program offers a complete Masters degree, as well as options for a Graduate Certificate and a Graduate Diploma in Learning Science and Technology. Students can enrol for the Masters and later decide to complete their studies after 4 subjects to receive the Graduate Certificate or after 6 subjects to receive the Graduate Diploma. Find out more about the structure of each stream on the Professional and Research stream pages.
Enrolling in just one Unit
It is also possible to take subjects individually. You may be interested in just one of the program’s units for professional development or upskilling, but are not interested in working towards a degree. In this case, you can enrol as a non-award student. The application for non-award study is available from the applications page or from the Faculty's Student Administration office.
Note: If you are interested in an individual unit, and you might decide on further study towards a degree later, we recommend you enrol in a degree program. This is because when you enrol in subjects as “non-award” study, you may not be able to get full credit for them towards a degree later. Whereas, if you enrol in the degree program, you can take the unit you’re interested in, and afterwards, make the decision to end your studies there, or do a few more units to receive a graduate certificate or higher degree.
Reliable access to a computer with a broadband connection is required. Because so much of the program relies on online collaboration, sometimes with live instructor video and other multimedia, a stable internet connection is essential. If you don't have a connection at home, you can work from the computer labs available on the University campus.
